According to today's Sacramento Bee, 1/2/11,
The local branch of the U.S. attorney's office muscled up its collection efforts last fiscal year and took in nearly $108 million in criminal and civil judgments, roughly 64 cents more per dollar than it collected in 2008-09.
The sharp increase in captured money underscores a record-setting year for the U.S. Justice Department nationally. Federal attorneys in 94 offices around the country collected a total $6.68 billion for the 2009-10 year.
Like those offices, the U.S. attorney in Sacramento handles federal criminal and civil cases and collects debts from that litigation in California's Eastern District, which covers the state's interior from the Oregon border to Bakersfield.
Last year the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California collected at least six times the amount of money needed to run its operation for that year, according to an official press statement.
